THE VALUES OF THE LANDSCAPE OF LES GARRIGUES
Alcanó
Town in El Segrià near the county of Les Garrigues. Of Garrigues essence, the land is dotted with olive groves, dry-stone terraces and vaulted huts, factors which often lead Alcanó to be included within the High Garrigues.

THE LEGEND OF ALCANÓ AND ITS PEOPLE
Origins
Alcanó is of Mozarabic origin. In historical texts it appeared as an “aduar”, a small nomadic Arab settlement formed by tents or huts. This may be what inspired the legend that explains the town’s name. The legend says that with the continual battles between Arabs and Christians for possession of the territory, the Christians, after conquering the “aduar”, constructed a cannon to use against the Arabs arriving from Lleida to the cry of “Al Canó!” (“To the Cannon!”). Hence the town’s name.
The town’s population of 235 inhabitants (IDESCAT, 2020) has long been closely linked to the farming sector. Little by little, and especially after the construction of the Segarra-Garrigues canal, this connection has started to diversify. Our mill has played a key role in this phenomenon, thanks to the commercialisation of agricultural products and the production of our olive oil with Protected Designation of Origin Les Garrigues.
The typical products are muffins and olive oil, held in high esteem by Alcanó residents and the inhabitants of neighbouring towns.

MEDIEVAL ALMUNIA
Lo castell
Alcanó still conserves the historical almunia (a type of Islamic settlement), the medieval structure of 'lo Castell' (the castle) located in the middle of the town, at one end of the main square.
The structure of the building, belonging to three families of the villa, can still be made out.
In spite of the years gone by, a few small openings can be discerned, especially a pointed arch window, an embrasure on the lateral wall and a drip mould on one of the façades.
