The extra virgin oil KYLATT of Molí d’Alcanó (Fruits de Ponent Group) has been awarded the Gourmet Gold Medal by the Association for the Valorisation of Agricultural Products (AVPA) based in Paris, France. In a ceremony broadcast last Thursday through YouTube, due to the health crisis, the APVA announced the winning oils in the different categories.
KYLATT-L’Or de Ponent has received the Gourmet Gold Medal in the Light Mature category, competing with oils from the main producing countries: Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Algeria, France and Morocco. A jury formed by expert tasters, gastronomists and producers has selected this oil from Molí d’Alcanó – an extra virgin made from 100% Arbequina olives – for its balance between the different organoleptic virtues. The competition consists of three phases, in which the jury selects the best oil samples until reaching a final tasting (third phase) where a jury different from the previous ones awards the final marks to grant one of the three medals – Gold, Silver, or Bronze – or a Gourmet diploma.
The oil KYLATT comes from selected Arbequina olives from the fields of the members in Alcanó and was produced before the start of the normal harvest season. It underwent a meticulous production process, in which the chef Oriol Ivern, of the Michelin-star restaurant Hisop in Barcelona, also intervened, conducting the initial tastes and advising Molí d’Alcanó in order to find a suitable balance.
In the AVPA competition – which, in previous editions, was usually held at the Paris City Hall – over 300 samples of oils from around the world participated, and it represents one of the most important international competitions designed to showcase quality oils.
Molí d’Alcanó, which is located here in El Segrià and belongs to the Fruits de Ponent Cooperative Group, depends on a network of member producers and forms part of the Protected Designation of Origin Les Garrigues. The other extra virgin oil brand it produces and commercialises is L’Or de Ponent.
